About Victoria Scholars

The Victoria Scholars was founded in 1993 by graduates of Toronto’s St. Michael’s Choir School and takes its name from Tomas Luis de Victoria, an outstanding Spanish composer of the Renaissance period whose music is renowned for its deep spirituality and emotional expressiveness. The essence of the Scholars’ music is an emphasis on the clarity and balance of sound so characteristic of Renaissance music, which the ensemble presents through the unique sonority of male voices, and applies to a repertoire and compassing works from various eras; contemporary pieces in a variety of styles; and newly commissioned works.
 
Past winners of the Canada Council Healey Willan Grand Prize in the CBC Radio National Competition for Amateur Choirs, the Victoria Scholars has completed successful tours nationally and internationally, makes frequent appearances as special guest with other artists and performing arts organizations from Toronto and abroad, and has produced its own five widely acclaimed recordings – including John Edward Ronan‘s Tenebrae.

Music Director
Jerzy Cichocki

Jerzy Cichocki is music director of the Victoria Scholars. From 1986 to 2016, he served St. Michael’s Choir School in various capacities, including as artistic director, principal choir conductor, and organist. His academic and professional credentials include degrees from Yale University (MMus, MMA, DMA) where he specialized in choral conducting, and from the University of Toronto (BMus, BEd), where he studied music and education. He holds associateship diplomas in piano and organ performance, and is a Fellow of the Royal Canadian College of Organists.
 
Dr. Cichocki has performed as conductor with notable Canadian choirs and orchestras, and his discography includes recordings of sacred and other choral music with the Victoria Scholars in St. Michael’s Choir School. His publication With Angels and Archangels (2016, published by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Toronto), is an extensive collection of hymns and sacred songs that represent the tradition of Christian hymnody from the third century to the present.
